SAMPLE QUESTION: Success is something which most people try to achieve. What can success mean to different people? What is your view of success? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge.

SAMPLE ANSWER:

Success can be defined as a goal that an individual set for oneself. It can be as simple as acing an examination, or it could also be quite complex, such as developing a new cure for cancer. Regardless of its complexity, success is something that is subjective and its measure varies from one person to the other.

Some people equate success with financial achievement. For these individuals, a person is successful if he or she can afford to buy the things they want. For example, a person who can afford to buy a new car may say that he or she is truly successful in life because they finally achieved their desired vehicle. Others, meanwhile, define success in terms of career advancement. These people believe that acquiring proficiency in their chosen field is a measure of success, and being promoted from a low-level position to a higher one is a true gauge of achievement. For instance, an entry-level nurse who has been working for several years and is finally promoted to a managerial position, may declare herself as a successful nurse because she had reached her goal of being a nurse manager.

In my own perspective, my personal meaning of success is when a person has met their goals. Personally, I aspire to be a nurse educator in the future, and once that objective is met, then I can truly say that I’m successful. Of course, my own definition of success is different from others, therefore, I believe that one’s achievement should never be used as a standard to gauge others’ performances. Simply because one has achieved his goal does not mean that the other person should attain the same target too. People measure success differently, and so this diversity in opinion regarding success and achievements should be respected.
