QUESTION: Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighborhood or teaching sports to younger children). To what extent do you agree or disagree?
In recent years, the curriculum for high school pupils has kept its focus on Science and Technology, Math and Language. While this is beneficial in preparing students for college, and soon employment, some people believe that this narrow focus on these subjects do not equip pupils with the necessary skills to be good members of society. It is for this reason that I strongly agree that voluntary community involvement should be included as a permanent fixture in highschool curriculum.
There are many reasons why I agree to the said proposal. First, allowing the pupils to be involved in their chosen community would promote awareness of many societal issues that plague today’s world. Children will be exposed to the plight of others outside their immediate social circle and this will lead to a deeper realization and understanding of the people around them. Secondly, constant exposure to people of different races, creed, social standing and beliefs would teach students the importance of respect for diversity which could lead to a deeper insight of other people’s backgrounds. In turn, this would help the students to better understand themselves and their role in society. In relation to this, unpaid community service can aid in fostering a sense of belongingness to the community and selflessness. Of course, the benefits of this activity will not only be experienced by the students themselves but also by the recipients of their community service. Lastly, this program will also emphasize the values of generosity, fortitude and good manners which all seem amiss in our society nowadays.
In conclusion, there are many positive outcomes that may result in this initiative and I strongly agree in including compulsory unpaid community service in high school programmes. While it is true that our society is in need of highly skilled, talented and intellectual individuals, it can also be said that respect for diversity, sensitivity to others’ needs and social involvement are equally important values and must be promoted in students’ education alongside other subjects.
1. Justify this idea further:” Lastly, this program will also emphasize the values of generosity, fortitude and good manners which all seem amiss in our society nowadays.” (NB: It is important in the writing exam that when you introduce an idea, make sure to explain and then provide examples or justifications to support the topic.)
